Softek Solutions, Inc., has installed Illuminate® at the Radiology Department of the University of Chicago Medical Center. Illuminate is a data-mining solution for the Philips iSite PACS that easily accesses any information contained in the millions of radiology studies stored in iSite PACS. Illuminate’s messaging capabilities also provide instant communication and collaboration among clinicians.

Paul Chang, M.D., vice chair of informatics for the radiology department and a professor of radiology at the University’s Pritzker School of Medicine, oversaw the Illuminate installation. “I envision Illuminate becoming an invaluable resource for all our radiologists,” Dr. Chang said. “Having all their studies at their fingertips will enable them to learn from their own experiences, which is a key part of the ongoing education and quality assurance of physicians at every level.”

Dr. Chang was a co-founder of Stentor, which developed the PACS that was later acquired by Philips and marketed as iSite. “Dr. Chang is recognized as one of the top experts in the field of radiology informatics,” said Softek CEO Matt McLenon. “We are excited to partner with this visionary leader and the top-ranked hospital where he teaches and practices. Not only are we eager for radiologists at the University of Chicago to experience the power Illuminate has to link them with all their studies and with each other, but we anticipate learning new applications for Illuminate that this top-flight staff of radiologists is sure to discover.”

During the installation, McLenon added, a specialist in the interventional radiology department who had been looking through his log book for a particular case for several days sat down at the iSite PACS terminal and found the exact study he wanted in a matter of seconds.

The University of Chicago Medical Center has been at the forefront of medicine since 1927 and now includes a general-care hospital, children’s hospital, women’s hospital, an out-patient facility, doctors’ offices and one of the nation’s premier medical schools. Its 9,500 employees include more than 700 attending physicians, 620 residents and fellows, and 1,000 nurses. It was ranked in the top 20 of America’s hospitals in 2008 by U.S. News and World Report and designated an Honor Roll Hospital, a distinction it has received 11 times since 1995.
